“The doors to a federal solution are closed, our new policy is a new beginning in Cyprus,” said President Ersin Tatar who addressed an event organised on Tuesday by the Marmara Group Foundation in Istanbul.
Pointing out that peace had come to Cyprus with the arrival of the Turkish Armed Forces; President Tatar said that the Turkish Cypriot people will not accept living under the yoke of the Greek Cypriot side.
“We are the true owners of Cyprus,” said Tatar, adding that the TRNC existed as a result of the joint struggle carried out with Turkey for half a century.
He said that the Turkish Cypriot side was completely opposed to the idea of ‘zero troops and zero guarantees’ and that there were two separate states on the island.
Tatar also drew attention to the efforts to upgrade the TRNC’s economy giving examples from the initiative to reopen the fenced-off town of Maraş, to tourism, higher education and the water brought from Turkey.
Touching upon the issue of hydrocarbons, the president said that the TRNC and Turkey will continue to take steps to protect their strategic interests in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Concluding his speech by highlighting the importance of defending the national cause, Tatar said, “The TRNC is real, it exists and we shall be seeing a stronger TRNC in the coming years with the support of Turkey.”
