President Ersin Tatar made statements regarding the events surrounding the celebrations of October 1, which the Greek Cypriot Administration marks as the anniversary of the establishment of the so-called Republic of Cyprus.

Tatar in his statement reminded that the 1960 Partnership Republic, established on the equal founding partnership of the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities, was transformed into a Greek Cypriot state on December 21, 1963, through attacks against the Turkish Cypriot people and the expulsion of Turkish Cypriot officials from state institutions by force.

In a written statement issued on Sunday, President Ersin Tatar noted that during his recent meeting with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York, he emphasized the realities of Cyprus and reiterated his proposal for a solution based on the existence of two separate sovereign and equal states.

President Tatar also called for a fair and permanent reconciliation through dialogue, but regretfully, the Greek Cypriot side maintained its uncompromising stance, as always.

He pointed out that, considering the statements and so-called proposals by the Greek Cypriot leader, it is clear that the goal of the Greek Cypriot side is to subjugate Turkish Cypriots under their own administration, which has transformed into a Greek Cypriot state.

Stating that the realities in Cyprus are evident, and it is not possible to return to the situation of 1960, Tatar underlined that only through cooperation based on sovereign equality and equal international status of the two states, can a fair and lasting solution be achieved on the island of Cyprus.

While the exercise to determine whether there is common ground between the parties continues, Tatar also mentioned that the Turkish Cypriot side has put forward cooperation proposals that would increase trust and good neighbourly relations between the two sides.

“If the Greek Cypriot leadership is sincere in its call for dialogue, we will immediately start working on these proposals, which are clearly in the interest of both sides,” he said.

President Tatar emphasized that the so-called Republic of Cyprus does not have the authority to represent the Turkish Cypriot people and added, “It should be known that one of the most important symbols of the unsustainable status quo, recognized by all relevant parties, is the executive structure of the unjust and illegal situation created by UN Security Council Resolution 186, which is being celebrated today. It should be known that the structure that turned into a Greek Cypriot state in 1963 has no authority or jurisdiction over the entire island or the Turkish Cypriot people. “
