In a statement marking the Press Day on July 11th, Speaker of the Parliament Zorlu Töre emphasized the significance and strength of free and independent media, both globally and within our country.

In his message issued to mark July 11 Press Day, the Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Zorlu Töre highlighted that the free and independent identity of the Turkish Cypriot press is indispensable to the democratic societal life in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

“The freedom and independence of the press are essential guarantees of democracy. The press serves as one of the tools through which the public participates in governance, thereby ensuring the functioning of democracy with all its institutions and rules,” he said.

Acknowledging the role of the press in informing, warning, and overseeing political authorities, Töre underscored its critical importance in contemporary democracies. He expressed gratitude for the significant contributions of the Turkish Cypriot press to democracy, the country, its people, and its politicians.

He also extended heartfelt respect and admiration to all media professionals who work tirelessly under challenging conditions on Press Day.
