The deadline for political parties to nominate candidates for the upcoming “Parliamentary and Local Administration By-Elections” to be held on Sunday, June 25th ended on Monday.
Candidates will be contesting for the single seat in parliament vacated following the resignation of the leader of the People’s Party Kudret Özersay in June last year.
Additionally, there will be a local by-election for the position of one Mukhtar and a total of 50 elderly council membership positions in five districts all vacant for a various number of reasons.
So far, ten individuals have announced their candidacies for the by-election on June 25th.
While the coalition government partners, National Unity Party (UBP) announced Ali Başman as its candidate, the Democrat Party (DP) nominated Serhan Aktunç, and Rebirth Party (YDP) nominated Figen Yaman Lesinger.
The main opposition Republican Turkish Party (CTP) on the other hand has nominated Sami Özuslu as its candidate.
The Social Democratic Party (TDP) which currently holds no seat in parliament has announced Tacan Reynar as its candidate.
The Independence Movement has announced Umut Ersoy as its candidate while Abdullah Korkmazhan, Meriç Erülkü, Çetin Sadeli, and Talip Sancar will be running as independent candidates.
The candidates will be required to apply to district election boards on Wednesday, May 31st and will be announced temporarily on June 1st.
The final list of candidates will be confirmed on June 4th, and election campaigning will begin on June 5th.
Election bans had come into force last week on Friday, May 26th.
All government activity including the activity of public bodies are not allowed to compete with the election campaign which means that no government or public resources can be used for political parties or candidates.
During the election restrictions, candidates are not allowed to make any financial contributions to any sports clubs, associations, charities, or similar organizations.
All public job appointments, promotions and tenders have also been suspended until the election is held.
