
The process for the by-election that will be held June 25 for the election of one MP as well as other members of local administrations is continuing.
The objection period for candidates who applied last week came to an end on Sunday.
The High Electoral Council announced on Sunday that the Social Democratic Party’s (TDP) candidate Tacan Reynar could not run in the election on the grounds that he has not been permanently residing in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus for the last 3 years.
However in accordance with Article 63 of the election and plebiscite law, Tacan Reynar’s name will still appear on the ballot paper but that the votes he receives will be declared null and void.
A separate objection put forward by Meriç Erülkü regarding political parties was also rejected by the council.
The ballot voter lists will remain on display until June 13.
The name drawing process that will determine the order that political parties and independent candidates will appear on the ballot paper, and the order in which they will deliver their speeches will take place today.
In the meantime, candidates are now able to carry out election propaganda.
The High Electoral Council reminded that it has published the rules that must be followed during this time.
As of today political parties and independent candidates are able to publish ads, hand out pamphlets and distribute all kinds of materials until 6pm, the day before the election.
During that period the distribution, display, sale of all election materials will be forbidden.
The council also announced that ballot samples can be distributed at any time.
It also reminded that propaganda or campaigning materials may not display the Turkish and TRNC or flags any religious or Arabic inscriptions.
Wall posters for political parties and independent muktar candidates should be hung in places to be displayed by District Election Boards in cities and towns.
A total of 12 candidates, 5 of them from political parties and 7 independent candidates will compete for the single seat in parliament on June 25.
