Date Added: 11 October 2023

A protocol was signed on Tuesday between the Turkish Embassy in Lefkoşa and the KAMTEK Student Dormitories located on the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) campus to find a solution to the housing problem which has become a growing problem for Turkish students enrolling in universities in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

The Turkish Embassy in Lefkoşa is signing lease agreements with private dormitories in the TRNC to address the housing issue for students.

The 802-student capacity KAMTEK Dormitory will begin accepting students in mid-November.

Metin Feyzioğlu, the Turkish Ambassador to Lefkoşa, speaking before the signing ceremony, said that the TRNC, as an education hub, which hosts students from many countries worldwide, has been experiencing a decrease in the number of students coming from Türkiye in recent years.

Feyzioğlu pointed out that one of the most significant reasons for this decline is the housing problem. He stated that the protocol to be signed between the Turkish Embassy in Lefkoşa and the KAMTEK student dormitory at the EMU Campus would be the beginning of a solution to this issue.

Feyzioğlu also emphasized that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has given clear instructions on this matter.

Ali Kamacıoğlu, the Director of KAMTEK, expressed his hope that the number of students coming from Türkiye to the island will increase once again.

Following the speeches, the protocol was signed by Metin Feyzioğlu, the Turkish Ambassador to Lefkoşa, along with Mithat Tekcan, the Embassy’s Sports Coordinator, Ömer Cihan, the Director of the Turkish Coordination and Cooperation Agency Office (KEİ) in the TRNC, and Ali Kamacıoğlu, the Director of KAMTEK.
