Retiring Chief justice Şefik begins farewell visits

The head of the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Narin Ferdi Şefik is preparing to hand over her duties before retiring later this month.

Visits are being conducted by both Şefik and the newly appointed Chief Justice Bertan Özerdağ to state and government officials in line with state tradition ahead of the handover ceremony scheduled for May 16.

The two visited the Speaker of Parliament Zorlu Töre on Wednesday.

Welcoming the outgoing and new Chief Justices Narin Ferdi Şefik and Bertan Özerdağ, the Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Zorlu Töre stated that the parliament has been doing its utmost in response to the rising crime rate in the country.

Töre highlighted the efforts of the government and all relevant institutions and stakeholders in addressing the issue, mentioning increased policing efforts.

Şefik addressed the increasing workload in the courts due to the  rise in the number of cases emphasizing the need for closer attention to this matter.

She also noted the necessity for several amendments to the constitution to address the needs of the judiciary, including shortages in judges, buildings, and personnel.

In response, Töre acknowledged the government’s efforts in tackling the rise in crime and stressed the importance of preventive measures and continued efforts from parliament.

He emphasized the need for families and individuals to be vigilant, while also addressing the need for amendments to the constitution, highlighting the importance of informing the public thoroughly about proposed changes.

Expressing gratitude for Şefik’s services to the judiciary, Töre extended his best wishes for her health and peace in her future endeavours.

He congratulated Özerdağ on assuming this important role, noting that besides serving as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Özerdağ will also hold other significant positions such as the Chairman of the High Election Board.

Töre wished Özerdağ success and ease in his new responsibilities.
