Date Added: 04 March 2024

The capacity of the Meteorology Services’ Seismology Department has been increased.

The team that contributed to the development of the Seismology Department was accepted by the Minister of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arıklı.

Speaking during the visit, Minister Arıklı reminded that after the disaster of the century on February 6 last year, a protocol was signed on March 21, 2023 with Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute in order to improve the earthquake monitoring, analysis and reporting capacity of the Meteorology Department and stated that an important deficiency has now been eliminated.

Noting that the capacity of the Meteorology Services Seismology Department was increased during the time the team was in the country, Arıklı stated that its technical infrastructure was improved thanks to new computers and software.

He stated that within the framework of the studies carried out, the international communication network of the Meteorology Services Seismology Department has been improved, so that information can be obtained from more sources in earthquake analysis.

Stating that together with the geophysical engineers and technical personnel working in the Seismology Department, training was provided to the personnel regarding the studies carried out at the stations in Lefke, Alevkayası, Hisarköy and Akdeniz, Arıklı stated that improvement and renovation works were carried out at four stations affiliated to the Seismology Department.

“We are grateful for the support provided for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to become self-sufficient in earthquake monitoring and analysis,” said Arıklı.
