Reminding that during the leaders’ visit to the Anthropology Laboratory of the Committee on Missing Persons in July 2023, it was agreed to increase the excavation capacity of the committee, the statement said “This new donation will support the work of the Committee on Missing Persons in 2024, including strengthening the excavation teams”

“At the same time, the donation contributes to the Committee’s goal of identifying and returning the remains of missing persons to their families and aims to end the uncertainty that has affected families for many years” the statement continued.

The Committee, which was established in 1981 by the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders through an agreement under the auspices of the United Nations and funded by the European Union, became active in 2006 and undertook missions to exhume, identify and return the remains of missing persons to their families.

In the statement, it was pointed out that a total of 1,047 Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot missing persons have been identified so far and returned to their families for proper funerals.

It was emphasized that the Committee on Missing Persons needs donations in order to continue the project.
