British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will pay a one-day visit to Cyprus.
While it was announced that Starmer will meet with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulidis today, the Office of the President has urged UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to meet with President Ersin Tatar during his visit to Cyprus.
Making a statement on the issue, the Office of the Presidency noted that President Ersin Tatar contacted the British authorities through his Special Representative and requested a meeting with Starmer.
In a written statement made by the Presidency, it was stated that “As one of the guarantor powers in Cyprus, the UK has an obligation to treat the two sides equally”.
Pointing out that there are two sides in Cyprus and that any solution requires dialogue, cooperation and understanding between the parties, the statement emphasized that ignoring the existence of the Turkish Cypriot people and meeting with only one of the parties would undermine efforts to build trust between the parties and pave the way for meaningful cooperation in different areas.
