President Ersin Tatar has reiterated his call to the international community for the lifting of unjust embargoes imposed on the Turkish Cypriot people, emphasizing that the TRNC is an independent Turkish state and there is no turning back from this.

Tatar stressed that there will be no stepping back from the current situation but rather progress forward, particularly highlighting that with the support of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the visibility of the TRNC and its international contacts have increased and will continue to increase.

President Tatar’s words came during the “27th Eurasian Economic Summit” organized by the Türkiye Marmara Group Strategic and Social Research Foundation.

The summit, held in Istanbul, began with the reading out of messages from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev followed by speeches delivered by President Ersin Tatar, former Turkish Vice President and Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Turkish Grand National Assembly Fuat Oktay, Istanbul Governor Davut Gül, and former Turkish Foreign Minister and current MP Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu.

President Tatar began his speech at the summit with a brief background of the Cyprus Problem.

Tatar emphasized that the Turkish Cypriot people subsequently established their state, sovereignty, and independence following Türkiye’s timely intervention in 1974.

Pointing out that decades of talks for a federal solution on the island had failed to yield positive results, Tatar said that the Turkish Cypriot side was now pursuing a new policy on the island.

Asserting that the Turkish Cypriot people will not give up their state, sovereignty, and independence, Tatar said that the UN and all parties should respect this and act equally according to the realities on the island.

He stated that a cooperation-based agreement could be reached between the two states on the island, especially emphasizing that Türkiye and the TRNC are the most suitable routes for transporting energy resources to Europe.

Reiterating his call for the unjust embargoes imposed on the Turkish Cypriot people to be lifted to the international community, Tatar highlighted that in Cyprus, where two states exist; the Turkish Cypriot people are a community with equal rights as the Greek Cypriots.

He expressed the view that according to the realities in Cyprus, these unfair embargoes must now come to an end, stating that the TRNC has taken its place as a strong state in the Eastern Mediterranean and that the Turkish Cypriot people are as equal and entitled as the Greeks. The president also emphasized the importance of Türkiye’s presence in Cyprus as a guarantor power, particularly in light of regional developments such as the conflict in Gaza.

He questioned why the international community insisted on keeping the embargoes in place even though Turkish Cypriots demonstrated on numerous occasions their desire for a settlement on the island.

As part of his other contacts in Istanbul, President Tatar also gave an interview to an Azerbaijani television channel during which he once again thanked President Aliyev for his support in the struggle for the TRNC and the Turkish Cypriot people to take their deserved place in the world.

Tatar reiterated that the TRNC is an independent Turkish state and there is no turning back from this, expressing that the new policy is also being pursued through the state and emphasizing the importance of the support that the Turkish world will give in this regard.

In this context, Tatar expressed his pride in being part of the Turkic world, using the phrase “One nation, three states” and thanking the support given to the TRNC. Tatar emphasized that there will be progress forward, not regression, stating that with the support of the President of the Republic of Türkiye Erdoğan, the visibility of the TRNC and its international contacts have increased and will continue to increase.
