President Ersin Tatar stated that they find the findings of the United Nations Secretary-General’s reports on violations in the buffer zone biased.
He noted that the Greek Cypriot side has stepped up its aggression against the Turkish Cypriot people recently and reviving methods it had previously tried without success.
“The people will once again witness and comprehend the efforts and steps taken by the Greek Cypriot side to make life difficult for the Turkish Cypriot people and to further isolate them from the rest of the world,” the president said.
Tatar also announced that he will meet with the Personal Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Cuellar, on January 30.
President Tatar, in an interview with the Turkish News Agency, evaluated the latest developments as well as reports submitted by the UN Secretary-General to the UN Security Council on the operations of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus and the UN Good Offices Mission.
Arguing that the report’s findings on violations in the buffer zone were biased, Tatar highlighted the importance of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Cyprus Stewart’s emphasis in his statements to the press on the need for a compromise model acceptable to both sides.
Drawing attention to how the Greek Cypriot side has recently been stepping up its aggressive actions against the Turkish Cypriot people, reviving methods it had previously tried without success, Tatar said, “The reason for my emphasis is that the Greek Cypriot side, which violated the agreement reached in 2021, spent two years convincing the UN Secretary-General to appoint a Personal Representative.”
Tatar emphasized that the only task of the appointed Personal Representative, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, will be to determine whether there is a common ground between the two sides for a new and official process that will not exceed six months.
He expressed confidence in the absence of any hesitation in this regard and reiterated that the agreement reached with the Secretary-General was in this form.
President Tatar also mentioned that the statements of the Greek Cypriot side about Cuellar’s mission to negotiate on the basis of federation are not reflective of the facts.
Announcing that he will meet with the Personal Representative on January 30 and thus the work will begin, Tatar said, “In addition to the work of the Personal Representative, we did not stand still where we are, and we proposed an additional cooperation process. I expressed my readiness to have a trilateral meeting with Mr. Christodulides to be hosted by the Secretary-General Guterres to start this process both during my face-to-face meeting with Mr. Guterres in New York and in the subsequent phone call.”
While trying to advance a positive agenda as the Turkish Cypriot side, Tatar emphasized that the message the Greek Cypriot leadership was currently giving to the world was a hostile one.
He accused the Greek Cypriot officials of openly targeting the Turkish Cypriot people politically in the messages they give to the public.
In such an environment, Tatar spoke about the need for a change in the situation for a fair and lasting solution.
He reiterated the call for the Greek Cypriot side to abandon its hostile attitude.
Tatar concluded his statement with the evaluation, “Let’s turn the island Cyprus, which we share, into a hub for cooperation. Let both peoples win, and let us contribute to the stability of our region.”
