President Ersin Tatar emphasized the importance of opening new border crossings, including the Haspolat crossing, to facilitate the passage of commercial vehicles, including taxis.
Speaking during a meeting with Değirmenlik-Akıncılar Mayor Ali Karavezirler and his delegation, Tatar underscored that these crossings would reduce traffic congestion at the Metehan crossing and enhance trade under the framework of the Green Line Regulation.
Speaking on Monday, President Tatar reiterated that while efforts are being made to boost trade and cooperation, the TRNC cannot accept transit crossings that may pose security risks.
In this context, he proposed the Akıncılar crossing as an alternative, describing it as a constructive and mutually beneficial solution for both the northern and southern parts of the island.
Tatar explained that there are currently nine border crossings and noted his on-site visits to assess their functionality.
He highlighted the growing number of crossings and stressed that resolving issues at the checkpoints would benefit both communities.
President Tatar also stated that the Akıncılar crossing would contribute to economic activity and improve cross-border exchanges.
He expressed his readiness to work collaboratively with local authorities, commending Mayor Karavezirler and his team for their cooperative stance.
Mayor Ali Karavezirler thanked President Tatar for his detailed briefing and emphasized the importance of central and local government collaboration.
He assured that both the municipal staff and local residents are ready to support initiatives aimed at enhancing connectivity and economic ties.
The proposals and discussions reflect the TRNC’s commitment to fostering a positive and practical approach to border management and regional cooperation.
