President Ersin Tatar today received Maria Angela Holguin, the Personal Representative of the UN Secretary-General.

The meeting was the first of a second round of talks the Secretary-General’s personal envoy is holding on the island.

The meeting lasted close to two hours.

Making a brief statement after the meeting concluded, President Ersin Tatar said that they will be meeting again with the UN Personal Representative Holguin on Thursday night at a dinner.

He reiterated that the Turkish Cypriot people will not be returning to the negotiations table until their sovereign equal is accepted.

Holguin was appointed by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on January 5, following the approval given by President Ersin Tatar and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides

Personal Envoy Holguin was appointed with a single mandate, with a period not exceeding 6 months, to investigate whether there is common ground between the parties for a new and formal negotiation process,” read the statement.
