President Ersin Tatar commemorated the late Salih Miroğlu, who served as the former General Secretary and minister for the National Unity Party (UBP), and Özker Özgür, former leader of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), on the 18th anniversary of their deaths.

Tatar, who is currently in Türkiye, paid his respects by issuing a written message.

“Despite having different political ideologies, the annual memorial ceremonies for these two beautiful individuals truly emphasize the importance of living in peace and tranquillity for the Turkish Cypriot people. We have learned a lot from Dr. Salih Miroğlu, with whom we shared the same political party and advocated for the same arguments. Miroğlu’s oratory skills and leadership spirit were influential for all of us. On the other hand, Mr. Özker Özgür fought in Erenköy for the freedom of the Turkish Cypriot people. While we may advocate different political views, our common goal should be to ensure that the Turkish Cypriot people live independently, freely, and honourably on this island,” he said.

Tatar also drew attention to the importance of unity and solidarity.

“We remember with respect these individuals who have left their mark on the political history of our country and who, after years of political collaboration under the roof of the parliament, departed for eternity on the same day. I extend my condolences to all their loved ones,” he said.
