President Ersin Tatar, during a meeting with members of the British Residents Society, once again stressed the importance of the solution proposal based on two sovereign states and equal international status for cooperation between two co-existing states and the stability of the region.

Tatar stated that foreigners living in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) supported the struggle of the Turkish Cypriots for fair and equal treatment.

President Ersin Tatar received a delegation from the British Residents Society, headed by Julian Mawsdesley on Tuesday.

Former British Member of Parliament and British Residents Society member Stephen Day was also present at the meeting.

Noting that foreigners residing in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus had supported the Turkish Cypriots’ struggle for equal and fair treatment, the President expressed his gratitude for their support to the Turkish Cypriot cause.

Tatar stressed that the United Kingdom, as a guarantor country, was well aware of the injustices faced by the Turkish Cypriot people and the struggle to protect their inherent sovereign rights.

“We have put forward a solution proposal based on two sovereign states and equal international status, where our people should have equal rights, equal opportunities, and equal international status at least as much as the Greek Cypriot side. This proposal is important for the cooperation of two co-existing states and for the stability of the region,” President Tatar said.

He also reminded that former British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, who used to support a federal solution in the past, is now openly supporting the two-state solution in Cyprus.

Stating that while the Turkish Cypriot side continued its struggle for justice, equality, and equal treatment, the majority of the British people living in the TRNC have their hearts beat for the just cause of the Turkish Cypriot people, Tatar stressed the need for close friends and allies who can strengthen the TRNC in this political struggle to offer a hopeful future to the Turkish Cypriot people.

The President also expressed his gratitude to the British Residents Society for all their lobbying efforts in bringing attention to the injustice faced by the Turkish Cypriot people and all residents who continue to face inhumane restrictions, including those that block direct trade and flights.

“Your ongoing support in London, including former parliamentarians, retired colonels, former judges, and former bureaucrats, is important to us” Tatar added.
