Tatar says Erdoğan’s address at UN resonated in capitals across the world

President Ersin Tatar said on Thursday that the call made by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for the recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) during his address at the 77th UN General Assembly had reflections at all capitals across the world.

Stating that he was returning from New York pleased with his contacts, Tatar said that he will be requesting during his meeting with the Secretary-General on Saturday the recognition of the Turkish Cypriot side’s sovereign equality and equal international status in order for official negotiations to start.

Evaluating his contacts in New York with BRT, President Ersin Tatar said that he has been engaging in intense diplomatic contacts in New York, conducting numerous meetings on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

He added that he had attended meetings of several civil society organisations as well as met with the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu and his team.

Tatar said that his special representative Ergün Olgun has also been meeting with representatives of several countries.

Touching upon Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s address to the UN General Assembly, Tatar said that the call made by the Turkish president for the recognition of the TRNC had resonated not just in New York but in all capitals of the world, creating a new perception.

The president said that he has been conveying to all those he is meeting with that official negotiations can only begin as and when the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot people are recognized.

“This is what the speech the Turkish President delivered pointed at,” he noted.

Tatar added that it was the right of every people, society and community in the world to determine their own future.

“Mr Erdoğan has made a call to the international community to end the unjust embargoes imposed on the Turkish Cypriot people and to recognize the TRNC. This is historic and has had its reflections. We shall continue our efforts from this point onwards for the recognition of the TRNC, we shall continue to share our views and position with our international interlocutors,” he said.

Pointing out that the balances in the Eastern Mediterranean had shifted; President Ersin Tatar said that Türkiye had put an end to the game being played by the Greek-Greek Cypriot duo.

Also touching upon reports that Russia was planning to launch direct flights to and from Ercan, Tatar said that there was a private initiative to launch flights to the TRNC, possibly by touching down in Türkiye first.
