President Ersin Tatar has reiterated that sovereign equality and equal international status remain his red lines ahead of the informal Cyprus meeting scheduled to take place in Geneva in March.
Speaking on the issue of new crossing points, Tatar noted that the Haspolat crossing was proposed to allow passage for commercial vehicles, including taxis.
He also reaffirmed his support for opening the Akıncılar crossing, which he believes would benefit both North and South Cyprus.
However, he emphasized that the TRNC would not accept transit crossings that could compromise its security.
During a meeting with İçim Çağıner Kavuklu, Co-Chair of the Bicommunal Technical Committee on Economic and Commercial Affairs, and committee members, Tatar highlighted the significance of the committee in addressing current economic and trade-related matters.
Addressing concerns about the existing border crossings, Tatar pointed out certain unfair restrictions and shared observations from his visits to the nine crossing points.
He noted that the number of crossings continues to increase and stressed that resolving difficulties at the checkpoints would be in the best interest of both sides.
Regarding the proposed Haspolat crossing, Tatar stated that allowing commercial traffic through this route would alleviate congestion at Metehan and facilitate trade under the Green Line Regulation, particularly in the industrial sector.
On the upcoming informal Cyprus meeting in Geneva, Tatar reaffirmed that the TRNC would not compromise on its fundamental principles.
“Sovereign equality and equal international status are our red lines, and we will never abandon them. Our struggle will continue in this direction,” he declared.
Tatar also emphasized that both sides have historical expectations and that cooperation between the two states could lead to projects benefiting both communities.
He thanked the committee members for their efforts and contributions, recognizing their role in fostering economic cooperation.
Bicommunal Technical Committee Co-Chair İçim Çağıner Kavuklu provided Tatar with updates on their work, highlighting efforts to enhance cooperation and implement projects that support economic development.
She stressed the importance of continued collaboration for the benefit of both sides.
