President Ersin Tatar has reiterated that talks on the Cyprus issue cannot begin until the recognition of sovereignty and the equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot people.

Speaking to reporters on Monday following the symbolic opening of the new legislative year, President Ersin Tatar wished all members of parliament and staff at the Republic’s Assembly a prosperous new term.

Tatar expressed that significant struggles have taken place under this roof, and long hours have been worked.

He reminded everyone that the Turkish Cypriot people will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) next month on November 15.

Touching upon the Cyprus issue, the president said that negotiations will not begin until sovereignty and the equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot people is recognized.

He added that conducting negotiations on this basis has become vital.

Tatar also noted that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s speech in New York indicated the solidification of this policy and that the TRNC had begun participating in several international meetings with its own flag.

He expressed the view that recognition will eventually come up for discussion as the world was gradually starting to see that there are two separate communities and democracies on the island.

President Tatar also pointed out that there are reform-oriented efforts in the country and that the pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine War, and other serious crises have led to a continued increase in oil prices.

He stated that the mindset of shifting the blame elsewhere with ruthless criticisms is not correct and this applies to South Cyprus as well.

Tatar emphasized the importance of working together in the struggle and stated that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has reached a stage where institutions and organizations will be strengthened with democracy.

He mentioned that reforms in the Parliament will increase public finance and transparency.

Tatar also highlighted Türkiye’s influential role in the region as a country and its leadership in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

He mentioned that Türkiye plays a crucial role in the geopolitical and geostrategic values of the region and that the road to peace and stability in the region is only possible with the recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Tatar expressed his wish for the new legislative year to open in the new parliament building next year, ensuring that parliamentary work will be carried out in more equipped and healthier conditions.
