President Ersin Tatar who is in New York for the 77th UN General Assembly spoke to TV NET regarding his contacts.

He touched upon the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s call to the international community to recognise the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) at the UN General Assembly and said that the Türkiye has once again shown that it stands by and supports the TRNC and the Turkish Cypriot people.

President Tatar evaluated his contacts in New York on a live program on TV NET and said that the efforts for the recognition of sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus are being carried out with the support of Türkiye.

He also emphasized that they will act together with the Motherland Türkiye under all circumstances.

Also referring to the Cyprus issue and the talks of a federation, Tatar pointed out that the talks of a federation have been ongoing for years and that no outcome has been achieved due to the Greek Cypriot side not taking seriously the meaning of equality.

“The Greek Cypriot side intends to make the Turkish Cypriots a minority. We will never accept that,” he said.

Pointing to the efforts of the Greek Cypriot side to dominate the Turkish Cypriots and to ensure the withdrawal of Türkiye from the island, President Tatar stated that once the Greek Cypriot side became a member of the European Union it began excluding Türkiye by insisting on zero soldiers and zero guarantees in Cyprus.

Noting that the Republic of Türkiye supports the policy of two separate sovereign states living side by side, it was confirmed once again with the speech of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the UN General Assembly, President Tatar reiterated that Türkiye stands by the Turkish Cypriot people under all circumstances.

He also stated that they are in talks with interlocutors for the recognition of sovereign equality and equal international status of the TRNC.

Also touching upon the issue of the US lifting the arms embargo against the Greek Cypriot side, Tatar said “This is a wrong step and we have expressed our reaction to the US administration”.

Noting that Türkiye will never abandon the Turkish Cypriot people and will take the necessary steps, President Tatar emphasized that armament will not contribute to any future peace efforts on the island but on the contrary will destroy any hopes for an agreement.

He also expressed his view that creating an environment for conflict will negatively impact the tourism and the economy of the country and called for the mistakes to be rectified as soon as possible.
