President Ersin Tatar spoke to the Anadolu Agency.

The president evaluated the Cyprus issue, the cooperation proposals submitted to the Greek Cypriot Administration and the extension of the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus.

In his statement to the Anadolu Agency President Tatar emphasized that on the Cyprus issue, it is impossible to get anywhere by ignoring the sovereign equality of the Turkish Cypriot People.

He stated that there can no longer be an agreement on a federal basis in Cyprus, and that if there is to be an agreement, it must be based on sovereign equality and equal international status.

“We have not yet received a reply from the Greek Cypriot side in response to the cooperation proposals we have presented. Our aim with these proposals is to ensure cooperation between the two sides that have equal sovereignty on the island of Cyprus and to contribute to the creation of common ground for a possible reconciliation on the island” he said and added that the TRNC is as sovereign as the Greek Cypriot administration.

Noting that the proposals he sent to South Cyprus are important for both the Island and the region, and that they were conveyed to his interlocutors from the international community, Tatar noted that if the proposals under 6 different headings are implemented, both sides will benefit from these.

Noting that peace came to the island on the 20th of July 1974 with Türkiye’s intervention, Tatar drew attention to the importance of Türkiye’s active and effective guarantees on the island.

Explaining that if the leader of the Greek Cypriot Administration Nikos Anastasiadis wants a development to take place that will benefit Cyprus and the two peoples on the island, then he should be realistic and look at the conditions of the island and consider Türkiye’s legitimate rights and concerns in this geography, Tatar said that no one will be able to achieve a sustainable agreement in Cyprus by excluding Türkiye.

“In order for the stability in this region to continue, Türkiye must also approve an agreement to be made. I will continue to inform Anastasiadis of this fact. If they don’t understand this and continue to deceive themselves then an agreement will never be obtained in Cyprus” said Tatar.

Touching upon the six month extension of the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, Tatar stated that the TRNC’s consent was not sought for when this decision was being made and emphasized that the UN should also respect the new policy carried out with the support of Türkiye.

“Look at the Brahimi Report and see the facts in Cyprus and make a new assessment. One cannot get anywhere by ignoring the vested sovereign equality of the Turkish Cypriot People. We expect the UN to comply with the requirements of our vested equality” he said.

Stating that they evaluated the requirements of sustainable peace, stability and cooperation in Cyprus and critical regions with the delegations under his presidency, Tatar emphasized that there can be no peace, stability and cooperation on the island and the region under conditions where the Greek Cypriot side has an international status and the Turkish Cypriot side is left without a status.

“The solution lies in the acceptance and confirmation of the sovereign equality and equal international status of the two sides in Cyprus,” said Tatar and added that if this is achieved, then common ground will be established for the start of official negotiations.
