Tatar to meet with Guterres today

President Ersin Tatar will be meeting with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres later today.

Earlier on Thursday, speaking at the prestigious Washington based think-tank, President Ersin Tatar informed the participants on the Turkish Cypriot side’s position in favour of a two-state solution in Cyprus.

Drawing attention to the unjust embargoes imposed on the Turkish Cypriot people, Tatar said that the Greek Cypriot leadership should abandon its policy of isolating Turkish Cypriots from the rest of the world.

Responding to questions, Tatar reiterated his position that talks on the Cyprus problem can only begin as and when the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot people is accepted.

Completing his contacts in the US capital, Tatar then moved onto New York where he will be meeting with the United Nations Secretary General António Guterres on Friday at the UN headquarters.

Tatar’s invite came after Guterres met Christodoulides in Belgium on the sidelines of the European Council summit last week.

The Turkish Cypriot side had requested that Guterres also hold a meeting with Tatar, and Guterres promptly invited him to travel to Brussels the following day.

However, Tatar was unable to travel to Brussels, and the New York meeting was scheduled instead.

It is expected that he will inform Guterres on his position on the Cyprus problem, insisting on the acceptance of sovereign equality and equal international status of the island’s two sides as “essential” for the resumption of negotiations.

Additionally, it is expected that Tatar will tell Guterres that it is “no longer possible” for one of the two parties at the negotiating table to be accepted as a state and the other to be seen as a community.

Earlier this week, Tatar rubbished reports that he will be forced to accept UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ proposals during their upcoming meeting.

He said that reports in Greek Cypriot media saying that he will have to accept proposals Guterres has made to Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides are mere speculation and have nothing to do with reality.
