President Ersin Tatar made statements to the press, following the ceremonial opening of the 2024-2025 legislative year at the Republic’s Assembly.
Tatar wished for a successful new legislative term in his statement to the press in the Assembly garden.
Underlining the importance of this year, the President reminded that the Assembly will move to a new building in the Metehan area.
Tatar said that the goal was to complete the move by the 41st anniversary of the founding of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and at the latest by the end of the year.
Stating that the new Presidential complex would be completed around the same time, and a 400-acre National Park/Republic Park would be opened for public use, he stressed that these projects will be completed swiftly, sending a message to the world.
Touching upon the Cyprus issue, the President stressed that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) will continue to strengthen through all its democratic efforts as a sovereign and independent Turkish state.
Referring to his bilateral meeting with the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and Erdoğan’s message on Cyprus and the TRNC during the UN General Assembly, Tatar noted that since the 1960s, every effort had been made to reach an agreement, but they had not seen the same intent from the other side.
Tatar reiterated, “The new process can only begin with the confirmation of the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot people.”
Stating that the UN Secretary-General had mentioned that a trilateral meeting, held informally and without an agenda, would be beneficial to everyone, he said, “I couldn’t say ‘no’ to this, so I said ‘yes.’”
Explaining that, after consultations with Türkiye, they proposed a 4+1 meeting that would involve both the Turkish and Greek sides, along with their respective motherlands, President Tatar added, “I believe our proposal will be considered by the Secretary-General.”
