President Ersin Tatar has said that the 101st anniversary of the 30th of August Victory Day demonstrated to the world, Türkiye’s determination to maintain its independence as a modern nation.

The president issued a message marking the anniversary.

According to a statement issued by his office, President Ersin Tatar said that the Turkish nation was celebrating the 101st anniversary of the 30th August Victory Day, which he referred to as a “great symbol of the Turkish nation’s determination and resolve in the War of Independence,” with great enthusiasm and belief.

Tatar reminded that on August 30th, 1922, under the leadership of Commander-in-Chief Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the Turkish army achieved victory in the Battle of Dumlupınar, ending the Greek occupation and demonstrating Türkiye’s determination to preserve its independence as a modern nation-state.

He stated that the victory, which became a symbol of consolidating the unity and solidarity of the Turkish nation and laid the foundations of the Lausanne Treaty, ensured Türkiye’s recognition on the international stage.

He also emphasized that the victory underscores Türkiye’s commitment to protecting its independence against all threats and stands as a symbol of a republic built on values such as democracy, the rule of law, and human rights.

Tatar further expressed that the day represented a critical turning point in Türkiye’s history, serving as a source of national pride and keeping the spirit of unity alive for the nation despite the passing century.

“The 30th of August signifies that the Turkish nation will never give up its freedom and independence under any circumstances, and it stands as the greatest monument and testament to its heroism and courage. This significant victory has not only served as a beacon of hope for oppressed and subjugated nations but has also provided strength and inspiration to the national struggle and resistance of the Turkish Cypriot people.”, he said.

Tatar said that the Turkish Cypriot people, with the strength and inspiration drawn from this great victory, persevered through the most challenging conditions, never surrendered their freedom and independence, and after an epic struggle against the fascist EOKA mentality, reclaimed their homeland and sovereign state.

Tatar also highlighted that the political ramifications of the August 30th Victory Day were not confined to the national arena but also had an impact on international relations.

He emphasized that the victory not only showcased Türkiye’s determination to defend its sovereignty but also signalled its desire to establish peaceful relations with the world, thereby paving the way to the signing of the Treaty of Lausanne.

“The Treaty of Lausanne, which granted economic and political independence to Türkiye, is an incredibly significant political achievement as it conferred international legitimacy upon the government established in Ankara in defiance of occupation. Serving as a founding agreement of the Republic of Türkiye and displaying the diplomatic success of İsmet Paşa, who, despite being a military officer, showcased his competence to the world, the success achieved in Lausanne under his leadership signifies the establishment of a new independent Turkish state both domestically and internationally, thus confirming its approval by the entire world. This achievement remains an inspiring and empowering legal document for all of us,” he said.
