The Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TGNA), Numan Kurtulmuş, emphasized that the current situation in Cyprus has made it clear that no solution other than a two-state model is viable.

Kurtulmuş stated that it is evident the Cyprus issue cannot be resolved by disregarding the Turkish Cypriot people.

During a press briefing following the evaluation of the 28th Legislative Period of the Turkish Parliament, Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş addressed questions from journalists, reiterating that the two-state solution is now the only path forward for Cyprus.

“The Cyprus issue has been a long-standing process. The people of Cyprus have demonstrated their willingness to make sacrifices to live together. The Turkish Cypriots accepted the Annan Plan, while the Greek Cypriots rejected it. Yet, the Greek Cypriots were rewarded, and the Turkish Cypriots were punished. The European Union, in particular, has consistently applied double standards against the Turkish Cypriots. Now, it is abundantly clear that there is no other solution but the two-state model,” he said.

Highlighting the existence of two de facto states on the island, Kurtulmuş underscored that it is impossible to find a resolution while ignoring the Turkish Cypriot people.

He stated, “There may be common interests, good relations, and negotiations between the two states, but it is evident that the Cyprus issue cannot be resolved by denying the existence of these two states or by disregarding the Turkish Cypriot people. We will continue to advocate for this on all international platforms.”
