Today marks the celebration of 11 July Press Day, commemorating the first Turkish newspaper in Cyprus, Saded, which was published 135 years ago by a Turkish Cypriot.

The Cyprus Turkish Journalists Association will host a reception this evening in honour of this special day.

The event being held at Paradise Park in Lefkoşa will begin at 8 pm.

In a message released for Press Day, the Cyprus Turkish Journalists Association emphasized that press freedom is synonymous with societal freedom.

The association vowed to stand against any steps aimed at restricting this freedom.

It highlighted the prevalent corruption and decay, underscoring the importance of ethical, progressive, and enlightening journalism.

The association also noted the critical role of the press in holding political authorities and other power centres accountable, informing and educating the public, and shaping public opinion.

The message stressed that for the press to effectively fulfil its role as the fourth estate, everyone must shoulder their responsibility.

“As the Cyprus Turkish Journalists Association, we will continue to fight for press freedom, which is indispensable for democracy and a crucial means of accessing information. We will always oppose any steps taken to restrict press freedom,” the message stated.
