Heavy rains and storms batter TRNC

The low barometric pressure system named “Dawn” will affect the region until Thursday, the Meteorology Department announced on Tuesday.

Heavy rainfall is particularly affecting the northern regions of the country. In some areas, the amount of rainfall per square meter has exceeded 100kgs, and some roads are partially closed to traffic due to hail and icing.

The Meteorology Department, issuing a warning for effective rain and storms today and tomorrow, announced that severe rain will leave the region starting from Thursday.

The entire country is under the influence of severe rainfall and storms caused by a low pressure systerm developing in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Heavy rainfall, especially in the northern areas, is proceeding very strongly.

The wind speed is expected to reach 60-70 kilometers per hour, especially in the northern coastal area.

The Director of the Meteorology Service Sinan Güneş announced that severe rainfall and storms will be effective until 6pm on Wednesday and will leave the region starting from Thursday.

Tonight, the weather will continue to be mainly cloudy with localized rain, isolated thunderstorms, with a chance of sleet in the mountains.

From Thursday afternoon onwards the weather is expected to clear up but local showers will continue on Friday.

Temperatures on Wednesday will remain below average for the season and will gradually rise to reach close to or slightly above the average by Friday.

Meanwhile, crisis management centers have been established in regions to quickly respond to possible negative impacts caused by the heavy rainfall.

While, municipalities are on high alert to assist the public, the police department reminded that citizens can contact the police and fire fighting hotlines at 155 Police Emergency and 199 Fire.

Earlier in the day, there were reports of minor flooding and icing caused by hail storms, particularly in on the main roads and village roads around the Geçitkale region.

Minor landslides have also occured in some mountain roads.
