The Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Zorlu Töre has said that the fundamental deadlock in the Cyprus issue has been created by the United Nations Security Council and the European Union.

Töre also criticized attempts to link Türkiye’s EU accession process to the Cyprus issue.

Speaking during a visit to the Near East University (NEU) on Friday, Parliamentary Speaker Zorlu Töre slammed the EU for its reference to Türkiye and the Cyprus issue during its conclusions published at the EU leaders’ summit.

Töre highlighted attempts to link Türkiye’s EU accession process to the Cyprus issue.

He noted that the real impasse in the Cyprus issue was created by the United Nations Security Council’s decision on March 4, 1964, and the EU’s unilateral admission of Greek Cypriots into the bloc.

“The solution for the Turkish Cypriot people was the declaration of the TRNC, and we declared it,” Töre said.

The TRNC parliamentary speaker also pointed to the importance of sovereignty and emphasized that they would never relinquish it.

Highlighting the Republic’s Assembly and the TRNC as symbols of sovereignty, Töre stated, “We are proud and honored to have them and to be a part of the Turkish nation.”

Töre expressed their commitment towards preserving the TRNC and continue walking on their path with the support of Türkiye.
