The Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Zorlu Töre issued a message to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the death of Dr. Fazıl Küçük, the leader of the freedom struggle of the Turkish Cypriot people.

In his message Parliamentary Speaker Töre wrote that Dr. Fazıl Küçük, who shaped the history of Cyprus, drew the fate of the Turkish Cypriot people together with the prominent figures of the period and his colleagues.

He said that Dr. Küçük was a successful leader who undertook a sublime task in a period of painful and dark days full of despair for the existence of the Turkish Cypriot community, explaining to his people the necessity of organizing and fighting with determination, and reflecting the spirit of struggle to the society.

Töre said that Dr. Fazıl Küçük, who fought for an honourable existence with the strength he received from his people and the support of Motherland Türkiye, acted shoulder to shoulder with his people and pioneered the independence movement that was crowned with the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus on 15 November 1983.

“His principles, ideals and resilient stance are the greatest spiritual legacy he left us,” said Töre.

“The struggle of Dr. Fazıl Küçük, the leader of the freedom struggle, who spared no sacrifice for the sake of glorifying our state, will never be forgotten. I promise that we will forever protect and preserve the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which he entrusted to us, under all circumstances, and I commemorate him once again with respect and mercy on the 40th anniversary of his passing. May his beloved soul rest in peace,” wrote Töre.
