The Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Zorlu Töre has said that a federal solution could never be a realistic goal for Turkish Cypriots.

Evaluating the 20th anniversary of the Annan Plan referendum, Töre said that the greatest strength of the Turkish Cypriot people was that it had its own independent state.

The Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Zorlu Töre who issued a statement on the 20th anniversary of the Annan Plan said that the greatest strength of the Turkish Cypriot people was to have their own independence.

“Some provisions in the Annan Plan were as dangerous as ‘hemlock poison’. If the Greek Cypriots had said ‘yes’ to the Annan Plan, more than thirty settlements, including Maraş, 80 percent of the Southern Mesarya plain, 4 settlements in Karpaz, Güzelyurt, Alayköy, Haspolat, Çamlıbel, Gemikonağı, Yedidalga, Denizli, Yeşilırmak, eski Erenköy and the sea coast, would have been given to the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriot people would have experienced serious displacement again.

He argued that negotiations should no longer focus on a federation but on a new realistic ground, which involves two sovereign equal states and equal international status.

Töre also highlighted the importance of the Republic of Türkiye as the guarantor of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and pledged to protect the republic and the Turkish army in unity and solidarity.
