The Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Zorlu Töre issued a message to commemorate those who fell during the struggle waged against the British Colonial Administration in 1958.

In his message, Töre said that the resistance of January 27-28, 1958 is a very important turning point in the history of the Turkish Cypriot people full of struggles.

“The resistance of our people 66 years ago was proof that we would not submit to the British of the Greek Cypriots, while at the same time announcing to the whole world the desire to live in sovereignty and independently on these lands” said Töre.

“With the strength taken from this resistance, our resilient people did not give up the struggle for Turkishness on the island, keeping the spirit of freedom alive, even in the most difficult and dark days to follow” he said.

Stating that they will never give up on the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Töre said “we will work with all our strength to glorify our country and our people by holding on to these lands and our martyrs”.

He commemorated those who were martyred in the protests in Lefkoşa and Gazimağusa on January 27-28, 1958.
