Parliamentary Speaker Zorlu Töre on Sunday slammed the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola regarding the statements she made during her latest visit to the Greek Cypriot Administration.

“We strongly condemn the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, who attended independence day celebrations of the so-called Republic of Cyprus which the Greek Cypriot Administration occupied through the force-of-arms in 1963. We strongly protest her visit to Cyprus and the unfounded statements she made in a joint statement with the Greek Cypriot leader in this context,” Töre said.

Noting that the President of the European Parliament Metsola has once again demonstrated the EU’s biased attitude towards Cyprus by ignoring the existence of the TRNC, Töre stated that Metsola’s remarks raised questions on the impartiality of the European Parliament, which claims to attach great importance to fundamental human rights and democracy.

Töre stated that the words uttered by Metsola during a press conference with the Greek Cypriot leader once again revealed the insincerity of the European institutions.

“While it is obvious that there are two states on the island, two separate self-governing peoples, the unilateral acceptance of the Greek Cypriot Administration as a member by the European Union in an illegal manner and the treatment of Greek Cypriots as the sole representative of the island is the sole reason for the current situation on the island,” Töre argued.

He said that the Turkish Cypriot side’s expectation from the President of the European Parliament was that she adopt a more impartial and balanced stance on Cyprus by upholding the values she represents and that rather than acting as a spokesperson, she should advise the Greek Cypriot leadership to accept our two-state proposal with sovereign equality and equal international status within the framework of the inherent rights of the Turkish Cypriot People in line with the current realities on the island,” said Töre.
