The Head of the Civil Defence Organization Atilla Karaca for his part said that they took action as quickly as possible after receiving the news of the earthquake.

Stating that their desire was to bring all citizens to the island alive, Karaca however said that this was not possible due to the scale of the wreckage.

Pointing out that it was not clear when natural disasters could occur; Karaca said that the country should always be prepared for any disaster.
