Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized that Cyprus is one of the adverse issues between Türkiye and Greece and said, “We are trying to solve the issue by expanding the boundaries of diplomacy.”

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan spoke to a news channel and discussed issues on the country’s agenda.

He emphasized that Cyprus is one of the key issues between Türkiye and Greece and said that they are trying to solve it by expanding the boundaries of diplomacy.

Fidan also touched upon Türkiye-Greece relations and said, “We have problems in the Aegean that we have inherited from history. Some of these problems do not belong to this generation, we inherited them.”

Fidan said that as responsible individuals of this generation, a methodology has been put forward on how to manage these problems, as mature states, these problems can be bracketed and in which areas relations can be improved, and that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has tried to advance this positive agenda with the vision and support of both leaders.

“The chronic issues between us, especially the status of the Aegean islands, issues related to armament, definitions of airspace and so on… We have a new perspective on how the problem can be discussed here” said Fidan adding that both sides have an agreement on military de-escalation and this agreement is going well so far.

Commenting on Türkiye’s membership process to the European Union, Fidan said that Türkiye’s journey to the EU is a long-standing issue, but that lessons have been learned by looking at both the past and the present.

He also said that the EU must first decide whether or not it wants to make Türkiye a member.
