The Deputy Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Fazilet Özdenefe and UBP Deputy Resmiye Canaltay, representing the “Committee for Monitoring Gender Discrimination in Laws of the TRNC Parliament,” held discussions as part of the meeting of the Specialized Commission of the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic Speaking Countries (TURKPA) in Antalya.
During the sessions of the TURKPA Specialized Commission on “Achieving Gender Equality and Empowering Women,” Özdenefe and Canaltay expressed their views on the first day, attended the sessions on the second day, and conducted meetings with guest countries.
Özdenefe and Canaltay met with Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş, the Minister of Family and Social Services of Türkiye, who attended the TÜRKPA meeting.
Discussions were held on what could be done to empower women and enable them to play a more active role in social life.
The meeting was also attended by Çiğdem Erdoğan, the Chairperson of the Gender Equality Commission of the Turkish Grand National Assembly.
As part of their contacts, the two TRNC MPs also held meetings with their counterparts from Türkiye, Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan.
While emphasizing the importance of addressing the empowerment of women and gender equality, information was provided to parliamentarians about the struggle and position of Turkish Cypriot women in society from the past to the present.
Secretary-General of the Assembly, Seral Fırat, also accompanied the delegation during the meetings.
The TRNC delegation returned the Republic last night.
