The Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Zorlu Töre recently spoke to CNN TÜRK, reiterating the Turkish side’s positions on the Cyprus issue and delivering key messages about the recognition of the TRNC.
Töre emphasized the expectation that the first step towards recognizing the TRNC would come from Azerbaijan.
“We expect Azerbaijan to take the initial step, followed by other Turkic Republics and countries friendly to Türkiye,” he stated.
Töre highlighted the unique support of Türkiye, saying, “Only Türkiye recognizes us, and no one dares to challenge us. Hence, Türkiye and the Turkish military are very powerful.”
The TRNC parliamentary speaker also dismissed the possibility of a federal solution in Cyprus, stating, “The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is the national state of the Turkish Cypriot people.
It is the national state of those who proudly declare ‘How happy is the one who says I am a Turk’. The geography created by the TRNC and the July 20 Peace Operation is a gift from our heroic veterans.”
Addressing Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s plans to establish bases in South Cyprus, Töre referred to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s statement, “We can establish bases in the TRNC as well.”
Töre elaborated, “Considering Türkiye and the TRNC, we can establish, expand, and develop both air and naval bases in the TRNC to enhance deterrence. However, as the Turkish army, Turkish security forces, and freedom fighters, we are already present, vigilant, and monitoring.”
On the establishment of a naval base in Mari by the Greek Cypriot Administration and Israel’s use of South Cyprus as a logistical base, Töre remarked, “If countries supporting Jews and Israel use bases there, and Israel uses them, certain bases in South Cyprus will inevitably become targets. They need to abandon these plans.”
