TRNC Pile Commission statement
Date Added: 15 November 2023

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Pile Commission issued a statement that the call for applications for some the lands in the buffer zone by the Greek Cypriot Mukhtar of Pile, is unacceptable.

The TRNC Pile Commission stated that the call made by the Greek Cypriot Mukhtar of Pile regarding the distribution of some lands in the buffer zone is a reflection of the Greek Cypriot side’s efforts to extend its sovereignty to the Pile village and to show that the village is among the lands under the control of the Greek Cypriot Administration of South Cyprus.

“It is not acceptable to unilaterally distribute the lands in the mixed village of Pile, where Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots live together, where Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot Police intervene in coordination and where Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot Mukhtars take joint decisions” said the commission.

It was also emphasized that it is of great importance that the call of the Greek Cypriot Mukhtar of Pile is not taken into consideration and that citizens submit their requests to the Turkish Cypriot Mukhtar of Pile.

The statement made by the Commission is as follows: “There is no question of allowing any activity in the buffer zone that the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot sides do not jointly consent to.

In accordance with the agreement reached, any project related to Pile, especially vital issues directly linked to sovereignty rights such as property, is subject to the approval of the relevant authorities of both sides and can be implemented with the coordination and cooperation of both local authorities, for the benefit of the two communities in Pile.

The principle of equity cannot be associated with third parties supporting the Greek Cypriot side’s illegal attempts to treat the village of Pile as a territory under its sovereignty.

It is our most natural expectation that the UN Peacekeeping Force, which is obliged to stand at an equal distance to the two sides on the island and act impartially, should act with the awareness of this responsibility and take the necessary measures against attempts to unilaterally distribute the lands in the buffer zone and condemn such attempts in the strongest terms.

It is of great importance that the call of the Greek Cypriot Mukhtar of Pile is not taken into consideration and that your citizens convey their requests to the Turkish Cypriot Mukhtar of Pile.”
