The Turkish Ambassador to Lefkoşa Metin Feyzioğlu on Tuesday welcomed the veteran delegation visiting the TRNC as part of a series of events marking the 50th anniversary of the 1974 Turkish Peace Operation.

Addressing the delegation, Feyzioğlu highlighted that peace has been maintained on the island for 50 years thanks to the Turkish Armed Forces and veterans.

He emphasized that Cyprus is not just an issue but a national cause for Türkiye and Turkish Cypriots, underlining the importance of accurately conveying historical events to future generations.

Speaking during the visit, the Turkish Ambassador to Lefkoşa Metin Feyzioğlu welcomed the families of martyrs and veterans who are in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) as part of the Cyprus Martyrs Commemoration Program.

He expressed pride and gratitude for the commanders, soldiers, martyr spouses, and children who changed the course of history, emphasizing that the spirit of dedication should continue not only on the battlefield but also intellectually.

Feyzioğlu reiterated the unwavering commitment of soldiers and veterans, stating, “Your path is our path.”

He attributed Türkiye’s position as one of the world’s leading powers in the region to the sacrifices of martyrs and veterans, extending heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the Turkish Republic to the veterans and commemorating the martyrs.

The ambassador also reminded that peace has prevailed on the island for 50 years, attributing it to the efforts of veterans and fighters.

He addressed those advocating for a federal settlement today, urging them to remember 1964, emphasizing the importance of recalling the sacrifices made by those who fought for the nation.

Highlighting that Cyprus has been a homeland for both the young and old, veterans, and soldiers, Feyzioğlu emphasized the enduring presence of Turkish Cypriots on the island, asserting that they are the founders and will never be assimilated.

Feyzioğlu also addressed Türkiye’s stance regarding Cyprus, echoing Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s and President Ersin Tatar’s policies.

He stressed the existence of two sovereign states on the island, advocating for equal international status for both, and expressing the desire for recognition of the TRNC and the Greek Cypriot Administration as separate states.

Emphasizing the necessity for acknowledging the reality on the island, Feyzioğlu recalled the struggle of the Turkish Cypriots and the establishment of their state, emphasizing that claims such as “Turkish Cypriots don’t like Turks” are baseless and ignorant.

Guest retired commanders also shared their wartime memories following the ambassador’s speech, highlighting the resilience and sacrifices of the Turkish Cypriot community.
