Türkiye’s Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz on Sunday strongly condemned a recent attack on a mosque in the Greek Cypriot administration.

After a Molotov cocktail was hurled on Saturday at the Koprulu Haci Ibrahim Aga Mosque in the city of Limassol, Yilmaz said that the act was “a clear attack on human rights, democracy, freedom of thought and belief.”

“Communal peace and human values were targeted in this act of arson,” Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz said on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, on Sunday.

Condemning the attack on the Köprülü Haci İbrahim Ağa Mosque, Yılmaz said that the attack was another manifestation of rising Islamophobia in Europe in recent years.

“This was a clear attack on human rights, democracy, freedom of thought and belief,” he said.

Yılmaz also said that it was crucial that all segments of society, regardless of language, religion, race, or sect, respond to the actions of those dark forces seeking to undermine societal peace.

“This includes, foremost, officials from the European Union and the Greek Cypriot Administration. Putting an end to the increasing and systematic Islamophobic acts and the mindset that fuels them is the primary duty of all humanity. We believe that the struggle against rising Islamophobia is not only a concern for Muslims but for all of humanity. Throughout human history, countless examples have shown that efforts to coexist in tolerance among individuals and societies of different religions and cultures will contribute to the peace and harmony of all humanity,” he posted.

The Turkish Vice President also said that they expected “the illumination of these inhumane and despicable attacks against our history, religious values, and sacred sites, as well as the apprehension and prosecution of those responsible behind them.”

The attack was also condemned by other Turkish officials and politicians, including the head of the country’s Religious Affairs Directorate (Diyanet) Ali Erbaş.
