Türkiye and C. Turkish Municipalities Union Cooperation Program

The meeting of the Union of Turkish Municipalities and the Union of Cyprus Turkish Municipalities was held in Güzelyurt on Thursday night.

The opening meeting, which took place at the Güzelyurt Municipality’s Atatürk Cultural Centre, was attended by Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay, Turkish Ambassador to Lefkoşa Ali Murat Başçeri, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment Fikri Ataoğlu as well as the head of the Union of Cyprus Turkish Municipalities and Mayor of Güzelyurt Mahmut Özçınar, Chairman of the Union of Municipalities of Türkiye and the Mayor of Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality Fatma Şahin and mayors from Türkiye and the TRNC.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay conveyed the greetings of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

He said that they will continue to do what needs to be done while at the same time deal with natural disasters such as forest fires.

Oktay also stressed that they will always be together with the Turkish Cypriot people.

“People are the mirror of the city, the city is the mirror of the people, and our mayors are the mirrors of both the city and the people,” Oktay said and emphasized that development starts locally and that cooperation protocols are not just a signature.

Noting that problems can always exist, Oktay said, “Problems should bind us together, not tear us apart. We will produce the solution and solve the problems together, but this starts locally.”

Noting that the establishment of a sister city network that included the municipalities of many countries and North Cyprus’s municipalities had become more meaningful, Oktay said that the economic support gained a different dimension with the Union of Municipalities of Türkiye taking the responsibility.

The Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment Fikri Ataoğlu for his part emphasized the importance of cooperation between municipalities and said that they attach great importance to sustainable municipal work.

Ataoğlu also thanked Türkiye for the support they provided on both fire-related issues and other issues, and noted that efforts to increase the greenery in the country will accelerate in the coming period, thanks to the water coming from Türkiye.

The head of the Union of Municipalities of Türkiye and Mayor of the Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality Fatma Şahin for her part pointed out that a new world had been established after the pandemic and explained that the concepts of economic knowledge, green economy and culture gained great importance in this period.

Şahin stated that the Turkish Cypriots have a great treasure in their hands that they can brand their greenery, soil, water and renewable energy, strengthen organic agriculture and sell them to the world, adding that they will blend all these together and make Cyprus an island of peace, love, brotherhood and development, and show it to the world.

The head of the Union of Turkish Cypriot Municipalities and Mayor of Güzelyurt Mahmut Özçınar for his part pointed out that they had produced joint projects with the Union of Municipalities of Türkiye to increase and share experience and knowledge, and thanked everyone who contributed to these studies.

Within the framework of the declaration, it is aimed to share information and experience among municipalities, to strengthen cooperation and communication, and to carry out joint projects.
