Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Thursday condemning allegations against a senior ministry official involved in the 2017 negotiations on Cyprus, saying they are “unfounded” and “completely untrue.”
The Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye, Tanju Bilgiç, stated in a Twitter post, “It has been observed that unfounded allegations have been made about one of our senior ministry officials who was involved in the unsuccessful Cyprus negotiation process in 2017, due to the disconnected approach of the Greek Cypriot side, in reference to a book published abroad.”
“These allegations of a compromising attitude to reach a consensus within the framework of these mutual visits are completely untrue,” he tweeted.
“The statements of Sinirlioğlu, then Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on our national issues, especially Cyprus, are recorded in state documents and open sources” Bilgiç noted.
Bilgiç said that there were baseless allegations, which were part of the efforts of the Greek Cypriot side to shed their responsibility with a sense of guilt and should not be credited.
He added that Türkiye’s Cyprus policy was clear and that this policy was well known by all parties.
