National Unity Party (UBP) MP Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu said that it was obvious that the invitation for the 5+UN informal meeting was not an invitation for negotiating a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation.
“From now on the UN wants a different process” he added.
The UBP MP Hasipoğlu evaluated the Cyprus issue on a program he attended on BRT where he shared the details of the invitation letter sent to the sides by the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
Stating that Guterres in his official invitation to President Tatar announced that the meeting will be held with the aim of understanding whether there was a common ground between the sides for reaching a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem in the visible future, he said “we certainly desire a time-table.”
Hasipoğlu also pointed out that another important paragraph in Guterres’ invitation letter was his expression of “this time should be different.”
“It is important that Guterres added this sentence in the invitation letter especially after the ‘two-states’ solution model put forward during the meetings held between our president and the UN Envoy Lute” said Hasipoğlu.
“For us, the negotiations should not start from where they were left off in Crans Montana but instead should start and continue based on sovereign equality of the two sides and by paying regard to equal status of both sides. When we look at the content of the invitation, it is obvious that this invitation is not for negotiating a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation” he said.
Stating that the UN Chief invited the sides to put forward their real intentions with an open-minded and flexible manner, Hasipoğlu said the sides will reveal what they want to negotiate in the process ahead.
“Tatar was elected by emphasizing sovereign equality and now the world is preparing to listen to the new vision and views of the Turkish Cypriots and to respect his election” he added.
