UBP MP Üstel given the task of forming new coalition government

President Ersin Tatar on Monday tasked the National Unity Party (UBP) MP Ünal Üstel with forming the new coalition government.

The move was announced by the Office of the President.

Tatar who had received representatives and leaders of the political parties with seats in the Republic’s Assembly last week, met with the leader of the UBP and Prime Minister Faiz Sucuoğlu on Monday afternoon.

“Following consultations with the UBP leader and Prime Minister Mr Sucuoğlu, the President, with the powers vested to him by Article 106 tasked UBP Girne MP Ünal Üstel with forming the new government,” the statement read.

Article 106, paragraph two of the TRNC constitution states that the president can task an MP who can receive a vote of confidence with forming a cabinet and government.

According to the constitution Üstel has 15 days to form the government or hand back the task to the president.

Ünal Üstel is currently serving as Interior Minister.
