UN personal envoy to meet with two leaders

The UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin Cuéllar will be meeting separately with the two leaders on Tuesday.

This is the UN envoy’s first visit to the island since the announcement of her mandate in early January.

According to UN Secretary General’s Spokesperson at the UN Headquarters, Stephane Dujarric, on January 30, Cuéllar will meet separately with the Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides and President Ersin Tatar respectively.

It is expected that during her stay, she will also engage with a wide range of interlocutors, from local actors to civil society, including women and youth groups.

Meanwhile, President Ersin Tatar on Friday met with the representatives of political parties with seats in parliament ahead of his meeting with Cuéllar.

National Unity Party (UBP) leader and Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, leader of the main opposition Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Tufan Erhürman, Democrat Party (DP) leader and Deputy Prime Minister Fikri Ataoğlu, Rebirth Party (YDP) leader Erhan Arıklı, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu attended the meeting at the Presidential Palace.

Also in attendance were Tatar’s Special Representative Güneş Onar, Presidential Undersecretary Okan Donangil and negotiation team member Özlem İnce.
