The National Unity Party (UBP) General Secretary Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu also reacted to the statement on Cyprus made by the United Nations Security Council.

Hasipoğlu emphasized that the UN Security Council’s statement is non-binding and insistently calling for the start of federation talks is unacceptable.

The UBP General Secretary Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu issued a written statement noting that the expectation of the people in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) from the council is to take steps to lift the isolation imposed on the Turkish Cypriot people in all areas of life, which constitutes a serious violation of human rights in Cyprus, and to respect the principle that the will of the solution to the Cyprus issue belongs to the Turkish Cypriots and the Greek Cypriots.

Noting that in order for negotiations to begin, it should be checked whether there is common ground, Hasipoğlu said, “aside from the fact that there is no common ground at the moment, it is not acceptable for the UN Security Council to make this non-binding statement and insistently call for the start of talks on a federation.”

Pointing out that the UN Secretary General should become aware of the fact that there are now two different positions in the UN records, Hasipoğlu underlined that the Turkish Cypriot people have a new vision and road map.

Stating that while presenting this new vision and road map, the reality of the two states on the island and the basis of the vested rights were taken as a starting point, Hasipoğlu said “Accepting our sovereign equality and equal status and respecting this will, should be the primary obligation of the UN, which has experienced decades of fruitless negotiations due to the Greek Cypriot side’s intransigent attitude.”

“Just as the UN respected the Kosovo-Serbia federation talks, and respected the Kosovans will for a solution, the UN should respect our will as well” said Hasipoğlu.
