UN Security Council renews UNFICYP mandate
Date Added: 31 January 2024

The UN Security Council on Tuesday adopted a resolution extending the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus mandate, which expires on Wednesday, for one more year.

The UN said that the force’s mandate is extended until January 31, 2025.

The resolution, passed on Tuesday, also welcomed UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ recent appointment of Maria Angela Holguin as his personal envoy to Cyprus.

It reaffirmed the “primary role of the UN in assisting the parties to bring the conflict and division of the island to a comprehensive and durable settlement.”

The extension of the mandate was adopted unanimously, as all 15 members of the council voted in favour.

This is the second time that the mandate has been renewed for a year rather than the previous six-monthly intervals.

The force, one of the UN’s longest-running peacekeeping missions, has been stationed on the island since 1964.
