Prime Minister Üstel has pointed out that if the Turkish Cypriots were freed from unjust embargoes, Ercan Airport would not only thrive in the energy sector but also have the potential to become a hub for transit air travel.

Üstel issued a written statement regarding the opening of the new terminal building and runway at Ercan Airport.

In a written statement after attending the inauguration ceremony of the new Ercan terminal and runway, Prime Minister Üstel said that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus had witnessed another historic event on the special and meaningful day of July 20.

“With the participation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, we are inaugurating the new Ercan Airport, which enters service as an astonishing masterpiece comparable to the most advanced airports in the world,” he said.

He pointed out that the level of transportation and energy infrastructure was one of the determining factors of a country’s modernity.

“The New Ercan State Airport, built with exceptional quality and size rarely found in our region, equipped with all the latest technologies, is one of the most crucial milestones for the future journey of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus,” Üstel said.

He pointed out that the newly enlarged Ercan Airport had become the largest airport on the island and would serve as the country’s new gateway and showcase, becoming one of the most significant indicators of the TRNC’s modernity.

“With the increased passenger capacity provided by our new airport, our tourism sector will gain significant momentum, contributing significantly to the country’s economy, he said, adding that the new airport had a potential of serving over 10 million passengers annually and triple the TRNC’s previous passenger capacity.

He pointed out that the airport had gained a second runway of 3,100m in addition to the existing 2,755-meter runway, making it suitable for all models of passenger aircraft.

“On this occasion, we once again call for the immediate lifting of travel embargoes against our country to the entire world. As with all other major projects realized in our country, the construction of this airport also bears the marks of the resolute stance and political will demonstrated by both our government and the Republic of Türkiye’s government,” he said.

He said that the TRNC was confidently advancing towards its deserved place among the esteemed nations of the world with all the institutions it needs and it’s constantly developing infrastructure.

“As the government, we continue our journey with determination, courage, political will, stability, and with the great support of our motherland, Türkiye, regardless of those who may be uncomfortable with this development and transformation. With projects like the water supply and electricity projects we have realized, and now with the inauguration of our new airport, we proudly declare to the whole world: “We exist as a state, we are here, and we are ready to join the community of world nations,” he said.

Üstel concluded his statement by expressing his gratitude to Türkiye and the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
