
Prime Minister Ünal Üstel emphasized the historical significance of the January 27-28, 1958 Resistance, describing it as a turning point in the Turkish Cypriot people’s struggle for existence and freedom.
In a statement marking the 67th anniversary of the resistance, Prime Minister Üstel highlighted its role in shaping the sovereignty and resilience of the Turkish Cypriot community.
“The resistance against British colonial rule on January 27-28 was a powerful demonstration of the will to assert sovereignty and reestablish ties with Motherland Türkiye,” said Üstel.
“The determined struggle of that day has paved the way for the Turkish Cypriot people to become a sovereign and free state-owning nation.”
He also paid tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice, stating, “On this significant day, I respectfully, gratefully, and fondly remember our martyrs who gave their lives for our homeland and freedom. I extend my gratitude to our people, who have the honor of being one of the exceptional communities that fought for and achieved their freedom.”
