March 1-7 Earthquake Week which aims to raise awareness on earthquakes and the importance of being prepared for such disasters is being marked in the TRNC.
Prime Minister Ünal Üstel issued a written message to mark Earthquake Week.
“During these days as we are trying to recover from the great Earthquake Disaster, we have sadly witnessed how a natural event can turn into a man-made disaster,” the premier said, pointing out that the geography in which we live in is an earthquake zone and that we need to be prepared accordingly.
He added that the government had taken swift action to make up for our shortcomings and to create earthquake proof living spaces through lessons from the past.
“In order for natural events in our country not to turn into disasters, we act with a supra-political understanding, review our buildings and preparations in line with the suggestions of all stakeholders and scientists, and take every precaution that needs to be taken” Üstel said.
He added that being prepared for all natural disasters, especially earthquakes and raising the public’s awareness was the duty of the country’s public institutions and organizations, as well as non-governmental organizations.
“The Prime Ministry Earthquake Assessment Committee, which is made up of scientists and experts from civil society, is continuing its work. We are about to complete the first stage of inspections at a significant number of our schools. After our schools, this process will continue with hospitals and other public institutions,” Üstel noted.
“With this awareness and sensitivity, we as a society are working hard to become a disaster-ready country in every field. I know that together with our people, we will overcome all difficulties and problems with a common mind and cooperation” he stressed.
