The 30th of August Victory Day was marked in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus alongside Türkiye.

This year marked the 101st anniversary of the victory in the Battle of Dumlupınar, which was the final battle in the Turkish War of Independence led by the founder of modern day Türkiye Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

An official ceremony was held at the Dr. Fazıl Küçük Boulevard.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Ersin Tatar stated that the great victory in Türkiye went down in history as the 30th of August victory and that it was understood by the whole world that Anatolia is a Turkish homeland.

Tatar noted that the Turkish nation won a great victory on August 30, 1922 worthy of its glory, history and nation.

Stating that by winning this victory, the groundwork for the establishment of the Republic of Türkiye was also prepared, he emphasized that the honourable and great struggle of Türkiye was a source of inspiration and strength for the Turkish Cypriot people.

Pointing out that the Turkish Cypriot people, together with Motherland Türkiye, are in a struggle to protect its rights, law and interests as a Turkish state in the Eastern Mediterranean and to leave an honourable future for future generations, Tatar said that the Turkish Cypriot people are an inseparable part of Anatolia.

Emphasizing that a new politics has emerged today, Tatar stated that the new politics is a national one.

“We will never give in to the intrigues and insidious games of the Greek Cypriot side, such as the removal of Türkiye’s guarantor and the withdrawal of the Turkish military from the island, which will break us from the Turkish nation on a federal basis and will throw us into an unknown adventure within the EU” said Tatar.

Tatar underlined once again that in order for a two-state solution to be accepted, the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot People must be accepted.

He also referred to the developments regarding the road project between Pile and Yiğitler and pointed to the provocations of the Greek Cypriot Administration and stated that the UN’s attitude cast a shadow on its impartiality.

“I would like to state once again in front of the public that the reaction shown by the UN, which has been a spectator to the dual roads, universities, shopping malls, various constructions and more than 300 trenches, according to information we received from the military authorities in recent years in the buffer zone, and a 12-kilometer wire fence line, does not make any sense. We initiated the work there for humanitarian purposes and therefore the actions of the UN have cast a shadow on their neutrality” said Tatar.

Expressing the hope that the negotiating process and the road works will be completed as soon as possible, President Tatar said that the Turkish Cypriot side supports all their problems being solved through an agreement.

Tatar noted that the Greek Cypriot side provoked the UN regarding the road works taking place thus leading to the recent developments.

He said that the road works will continue in the area.
